Polychlorinated Biphenyls

PCB’s were manufactured mostly as cooling and insulating fluids for transformers and capacitors. PCB’s can also be found in stabilizing additives for PVC coatings and electrical components.

Sources of danger:

  • inhalation of polluted air
  • eating contaminated food
  • skin contact with old electrical equipment that contain PCBs.

Health Effects of PCBs

The toxicity of PCBs had been known since before its first commercial production in the 1930s. PCBs also have shown toxic and mutagenic effects by interfering with hormones in the body. PCBs, depending on the specific congener, have been shown to both inhibit and imitate estradiol, the main sex hormone in females. Imitation of the estrogen compound can feed estrogendependent breast cancer cells, and possibly cause other cancers, such as uterine or cervical. Inhibition of estradiol can lead to serious developmental problems for both males and females, including sexual, skeletal, and mental development issues

EnviroPro UnLTD Corp. provides an array of PCB under which PCB’s are identified. EnviroPro assist our clients that services to suit the unique situational circumstances including:

  • sampling
  • acquisition of necessary permits/notifications
  • design of engineering controls
  • PCB removals oversight
  • providing necessary labels, warning signs and posted instructions needed to protect people from possible PCB exposure.

Comprehensive Operations & Maintenance Programs

EnviroPro can also provide comprehensive Operations & Maintenance (OM) programs. These programs are designed to inform building management and employees of possible hazards, proper periodic surveillance techniques and procedures for preventing and, if necessary, handling potential exposures.
